A Message from the Pastor

It’s January, which for many means New Year’s resolutions. There’s just something about the New Year that makes us feel like we can get a fresh start and do better than the last year. The world loves to make New Year’s resolutions. A poll of 15,000 people revealed this top ten list:

1. Get out of debt
2. Lose weight
3. Exercise/eat better
4. Get organized
5. Develop a new skill
6. Spend more time with friends and family
7. Help others
8. Work less, play more
9. Quit smoking/drinking
10. Change employment

Regarding the top ten list, 35% of the respondents broke their resolutions by the end of the second week in January, and 80% by the end of January. Ultimately, the biggest problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they’re only made once every New Year. Living in Faith we shouldn’t make New Year resolutions; we should be making “New Day” resolutions. Luther urged Christians to practice the daily renewal of their baptismal covenant by placing a hand on the head each morning and saying, “I am a baptized person, and today I will live out my baptism.” Wake up each day seeking to grow in faithfulness and glorify God. Persevere through the failures or setbacks and all the while trust God to help you change. If you really aim to pursue God and faithfulness each and every day, can you just imagine what your life might look like next January?
